Quality Management

Quality Management System

AMI prides itself on its commitment to providing superior quality products and services. This commitment is shared by every member of the AMI team and is embodied in our quality policy.

AMI’s belief is that doing it right the first time is the best and most cost effective way to manage quality and our business. Non-conformance to quality standards costs money and in the long term is of no benefit to anyone.

AMI management also believe that the optimum balance is achieved when customers get the product with the quality characteristics best suited to the requirements of their end-use, and that "good" quality is relative, not an absolute.

We Measure, Track, & Report Quality

AMI technical and sales staffs work closely with customers to determine both customer product and economic needs and jointly choose a product specification that will best meet those needs. Once the product selection process is complete and supply of the product to the customer is about to commence, AMI quality personnel enter the customer profile and product specification into its quality tracking database at the applicable source manufacturing plant. The quality characteristics of shipments made to that customer thereafter are measured, tracked and reported against those in the data base.

In the mineral business quality not only begins with the proper selection of the natural unprocessed ore while it is still in the ground, but it continues throughout the entire extraction and purification process right on through to the packaging and placement of material into the logistics, billing and shipping stream to the customer.

ISO 9001 Standards

A variety of voluntary standards and systems have been designed to facilitate management of these quality processes by producing and distribution companies. Because of AMI’s global supplier status, AMI chose to adopt an internationally recognized standard for quality measurement known as ISO 9001 for use in managing its quality processes. ISO 9001 was developed and is monitored at the AMI plant level by representatives of the International Standards Organization. Over a period of two years, AMI employees received training and education about the ISO process, worked with ISO representatives to write applicable standards for AMI operations, then went through a rigorous inspection and registration process with ISO before becoming ISO certified at both its Kaolin and Attapulgite operations.

Conformance to these standards is monitored by full-time quality assurance departments at all of AMI’s source plants. Non-conforming product is rejected and either reworked or scrapped.

In addition to marketing ISO 9001 Certified products supplied from AMI owned operations, many of the products sold through AMI’s distribution network, but manufactured by other companies also carry ISO Registration or Certification. Fine ground silica products from U. S. Silica plants throughout the United States are just one example of such ISO Registration.

We Meet Customer Requirements

AMI’s statistical quality management systems have proven highly effective in ensuring our ability to meet customer requirements. When any non-conforming product slips through our statistical measurement program we most often are able to recall the product before it inconveniences the customer. AMI has in place, as well, a company corrective action system for identifying the causes of nonconformance at all levels and coming up with permanent solutions.

Customer complaints are promptly and fully investigated as to the source of any nonconforming actions, and resolutions recommended.
