Fiberglass
The large global glass industry is characterized by a variety of glass forms, processes and formulations but consists of relatively few producers. Manufacturing plants are large and very capital and energy intensive. Excessive start-up time, down time and breakage can significantly affect the economics of glass making, so consistency of raw materials and reliability of supply are important. AMI’s quality products, logistical expertise and technical support all come together in this industry to the maximum benefit of AMI’s customers.
AMI serves two main types of glass markets, fiberglass and high purity, solar glass.
Fiberglass by definition consists of molten glass formed into fibers. AMI is a supplier of Colemanite, kaolin, silica and fluorspar to the glass industry. AMI kaolin products from its Georgia mines and processing plant are sold on a global scale, while Colemanite, and silica are marketed only in Asia. AMI’s kaolin is specially produced air-floated clay for use in the manufacture of e-glass type fiberglass used for yarn and reinforcement. Critical oxide contents such as iron, silica and alumina are tightly controlled shipment to shipment.
Colemanite is used for furnace stability, consistent melting characteristics, compatibility with the rest of the fiberglass batch, consistent B2O3 content, consistent batch viscosity, consistent temperature control, longer refractory life and high cost-effectiveness.
Fluorspar is used as a fluxing agent to control melt viscosity in silica glass.
